There’s only two proven method to charge the car battery with the power supply of your house. A car battery charger uses home electricity to recharge the battery cells. Alternatively, you can use your home inverter to charge the battery cells. Both of these operate with the home electricity.
Method-A. Using a Car Battery Charger
You should buy a good quality car charger for your car’s battery type. Pretty much all types of car batteries are compatible with these chargers except for the gel type battery cells. However, modern car battery chargers are equipped with high-end technologies. They’ll charge up the discharged batteries without you needing to d any hassle.
01. Preparing to charge the car battery
At first, you need to wear your safety gears. Working with power supply units might not be the most difficult task, but unexpected situations could occur.
a. Wear electricity-repellant gloves.
b. Make sure you aren’t standing on a wet surface, and your hands and feet are dry and clean.
c. Read the charger’s user manual properly before proceeding to connect the wires.
02. Removing the battery
Now, you need to remove the battery from your car.
- Pop the hood of the car open.
- Disconnect the batteries negative wire (the black one) first.
- Then remove the red or positive wire.
- Keep the battery on a dry surface.
- Wipe the battery with a wet cloth with baking soda, or just rub it with sandpaper to remove the grime from the surface. The dirt buildup on batteries has impact on the power absorbance of the batteries.
03. Setting up the charger to battery connection
It’s time to recharge the battery.
- Keep the car charger disconnected from the power outlet of your house.
- With the help of a connector, connect the black (negative/ground) wire to the black (negative/ground) port of the charger.
- Connect the red (positive) wire to the red port.
- Never touch the wire ends with bare hands; there might be things that shorten the wires and start conducting electricity. A fire might also be caught!
- Now, carefully connect the charger to the power outlet.
- The connection is set up!
04. Finishing up
The battery is in charging phase now. Most modern car battery chargers have indicators that give you an alarm when the battery is full. It may take a charger to charge the car battery 3 hours to 12 or more depending on the capacity of your battery and the voltage supply of your power supply.
Most car chargers will recharge your car’s battery within a period of 12 hours. Therefore, you can leave it overnight for charging. The charger will turn off charging once the battery is full. Sp, you can sleep peacefully at night, and get your car all-ready to be driven in the morning.
Method-B. Using a Home Inverter
Using your home inverter to charge the car battery will take less time than the charger method. You shouldn’t use this method frequently, but it’s a simple and easy method to apply once in a while.
01. Setting up the connection
The connection setup is the same as the car charger.
- The inverter shouldn’t be connected to the power supply before you set up all the connections.
- Connect the ground/negative port of the battery to the black wire of the output port of the inverter.
- The positive wire has to go to the red port of the output’s positive port.
02. Supplying power
Home inverters use the direct power from the power outlets of your house.
- Check the connections again before you turn the power supply on.
- If the connections are alright, plug the inverter into the power outlet.
- Connecting the wires in the wrong manner may make the battery explode.
03. Finishing up
Home inverters have a high power supply. It might take as low as 1.5 hours for an inverter to charge the battery completely. Some might take up to 3 hours.
It’s an easy method for fast charging. If you don’t have enough time to wait overnight for a ride, the inverter method would be a great option.
Safety tips for battery’s good health
